In London on Tuesday, a brand-new Guinness world record was set for “Largest Gathering of Games Characters” with over 80 participants meeting up on the Millennium Bridge. About two dozen primary school children all donned Mario’s iconic red cap and blue overalls while Crash Bandicoot, Sonic, Tails, Gordon Freeman, Yoshi and many other characters were also represented. (You can see many of them in this photo set created by Flickr user ramboando.) This record will appear in the 2009 edition of Guinness Book of World Records - Gamers’ Edition and the event garnered much coverage online.

Some of the Gamespot UK staff took part with Guy and Alex dressing as Bubba and Julius, respectively, from “Boogie” and Luke as Travis Touchdown from “No More Heroes”. Nargis from Bollywood Girl’s Guide to Life also went and interviewed a couple of the participants; a woman from Devon who was attired as Chun-Li said she wanted to be more like her, “the first female games character who wasn’t a damsel in distress”. A blogger from Games Digest called the sub-hundred turnout “pretty weak” and while I think the number that was garnered was fairly good for a first attempt, I do agree with his/her suggestion that a Japanese group would likely be the next ones to break this just established mark.

Coincidentally, the United Kingdom as a whole was recognized for a different, less interesting Guinness record earlier this month: largest distribution of free energy-saving light bulbs, for its “The Great British Light Switch” campaign.

It seems like they can make ridiculous categories and types of world records. Most hamburgers eaten while bouncing on a trampoline in sixty seconds, go!

Some of the costumes are pretty awesome though.

80? Seems rather small… you can probably find more at some place like Anime Expo or Comic Con or something.
