When I look at pictures of otakus’ rooms, it’s almost shocking when I consider the amount of figures, manga, anime DVDs, posters, wallscrolls, and other merchandise the people have. I have very little merchandise and media, and I’m still surprised by the amount other people spend on this hobby and interest.
The most expensive purchase I made has to be my 1/6 scale Asahina Mikuru Black Bunny PVC, which cost me about $70 USD. The rest of my figures were less expensive by at least $30 USD. The hardcore otakus seem to spend about thousands of dollars on one object, purchases that amaze me because I simply cannot see myself spending that amount for such things like a film strip.
What was your most expensive anime or manga-related purchase? Did you regret it afterwards or do you still think it was worth the purchase?

I’ve never spent more than 25 dollars on anything anime/manga-related in one go. I’ve got some useless crap like figurines which I bought on impulse at conventions (on average, about 10 bucks each) and then some less useless crap like Aria manga which was similarly 10 bucks a volume or so.
I think the most expensive thing I bought was a boxset of Ranma 1/2. I tend not to collect a lot of things as well, although I wouldn’t mind poster or something out of the way.
I have two $10 wallscrolls of the girls of FFX-2.
Which are totally just rolled up and chillin’ somewhere. But probably the most expensive thing I’ve ever bought would be anime DVD’s. I once bought all 10 DVDs of GTO (at $30 a pop) and lent them all to a friend. He lost them -__- you do the math.
And I have well over that amount of manga, maybe about $400ish worth. So those would probably be my overall most expensive purchase. But as for just one thing, totally a DVD. Those things are ridiculously expensive.
Although, I was very tempted to buy Vash the Stampede’s glasses once… or a model of his gun. Man, Vash is the coolest guy ever.
$86 for an anime cel is the most I have paid for anime merchandise.(It was of Sana Kurata of Kodocha, and since cels are rare to have, I bought it.
I don’t think I have anything other than DVDs and mangas. I’ve actually bought the odd little Cardcaptor Sakura figurines for my wife but nothing for myself. Boring answer I know…
My most expensive individual purchases have been box sets - the FLCL Ultimate Edition which was about $52 including preorder bonus and the DearS box set at just under $51. One time I bought 25 Geneon DVD’s for $100 and another lot was $117 (including the above DearS set) but the latter shipped in different parts. I haven’t regretted the purchases themselves but I feel bad for not watching some of them yet.
The price has been the main reason why I haven’t bought any real figures; some other excuses are that I don’t have desk/shelf space and that I don’t feel the need to get very many purely decorative items.
Sorry to double-comment, I just remembered that time I imported the Honey and Clover movie with English subtitles over a year ago (about $53) and I kind of regret it now that Viz’s version came out last week for half that price.
My 1/8 Scale Akari (Aria). 70~80 bucks.
Totally worth it. Nothing like a smile to cheer yourself up.
Can’t think of anything expensive since they cost around the same, but I guess I would treasure my Saber sports towel most. Hehe.
In one go? Probably my s-CRY-ed box set.
In one go… probably the entire Negima Manga set (or at least up to date at the time). That was about £90 for 15 volumes. I usually buy bulk manga like this, but never this much before…
Imported the first 26 episodes of D.Gray-man for a total of… mmmm, $80 dollars? Though that was technically two seperate things ^_^; I hardly have any merchandise except for a few plushies, a few random trading cards and one FMA figure (Hughes <3333) which I got for my birthday.
I tend to make things for myself instead of buying them… like my Cheese-kun plushie. ^____^
I have a decent collection of anime figures and merchandise, but rarely do I spend more that around $40. My favourite purchase was the figure of firefox-ko, which was a figure with an issue of Japanese magazine NetRunner, or whatever. It was around 40 with shipping. I buy Gashapon and cheaper figures, so I don’t have any one expensive item.
DVD boxsets are therefore the most expensive thing I’ve bought, unless there is something I can’t think of.
1/6 Saber Holiday Version, only 65$ :o
well my most expensive purchase for my otaku hobby would be usd$184, Gurren Lagann dieast. and usd$368 for a computer casing made by Soldam.
I can’t rally keep track of prices… I have bought a lot of box sets and shit, and all that, however, I don’t think I’ve ever spent over 70 bucks on one item.
I will say my most liberating purchase though was on my birthday last year when I had so much money that I had to buy at least one totally useless splurge item - bought a Lain artbook for I believe 30 bucks. It remains the pride of my collection.
