Like many other otaku (and perhaps people in general), I’m an impulse buyer. I see something I like, check my wallet to see if I have enough, hopelessly think of reasons not to buy it, and then purchase it. Unfortunately I do this with video games; I have a great amount of games I have purchased, borrowed, or rented that I have not finished. The term “pile of shame” is used to describe the games one has not finished, although it’s usually used for the games purchased.
My pile of shame includes the following off the top of my head…
NES: Startropics, Metal Gear, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, River City Ransom, Bionic Commando, Kid Icarus, Dragon Warrior, Adventure Island, Ice Climber, and Super Mario Bros. 2.
SNES: Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, Star Fox, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Contra III, Illusion of Gaia, Earthworm Jim, Kirby Super Star, Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Earthworm Jim 2, Castlevania: Dracula X, Harvest Moon, Donkey Kong Country, and Super Metroid.
GB/GBC/GBA: Super Mario Land, Donkey Kong Land, Pokemon Silver, Fire Emblem, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Golden Sun, Metroid Fusion, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Sonic Advance, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
N64: Space Station: Silicon Valley, Harvest Moon 64, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo-Tooie, and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.
You get the idea; that was just for some Nintendo consoles alone, and it doesn’t even include all the games! In total, the list likely exceeds one hundred games. I hope to one day play through all of them, although that seems incredibly unlikely.
What games are in your pile of shame? How many titles are in your pile of shame, and do you think you’ll ever get back to those games?

Ugh, I used to rarely beat games as a kid. I played them nonstop and was decent at them, but I never felt compelled to most of the time. Exploring the towns and making up my own adventures in ALTTP was more fun than actual progression. I’ve spent countless hours playing around in Majora’s Mask’s Clcok Town. So I have infinite unbeaten games. Nowadays I generally beat games, but its hard to go back and beat all those. NES games can be stinkin’ hard too.
Jet Force Gemini is freaking crazy to beat, well, just to collect all the tribals. I gave up after a while but all I had (have) left is the last Mizar asteroid boss thing. I feel so retarded for selling harvest moon 64….although I haven’t played any video games in a while so eh.
The perks of living in a 3rd world country means I never have to spend any money on buying original copies of games, which is why I have an extremely large library of titles, though they’re mostly Playstation and PS2 titles P:
I need to finish FFXII. Eventually.
Kinda distracted with Persona 3 FES.
Need to finish Between Good and Evil as well as most of the Rachet and clank and Jak series.
Oh……..if I give a list of what’s in my gaming pile, there is a ton of them. Like over 200 games or more. Lost count after 190.
I’m also an impluse buyer. When I see something I want, I buy. When I’m at an anime convention, I buy what I see looks cool. Without thinking too…
I had no idea you even had an NES. Let me borrow it along with Metal Gear?!
Back in 04′ I got rally into RPGs and nought pretty much every major title available using the awards on RPGamer as a basis of what to buy. However, it was extremely rare for me to get more than a few hours into them since I don’t play video games that much XD. As a result I’ve beaten like 5% of all the games I own - I consider that to be an extreme shame.
Also, manly tars from a fellow impulse buyer T_T
