Why should I bother to continue Special A?

There are only a few shows that completely frustrate me. Shakugan no Shana and Shuffle! were nowhere near excellent, but both were enjoyable (in the end) and filled with characters that I liked. I thought the shows were rather boring in the beginning and lacked any real depth and consistency. Shuffle! in particular completely changed its overall tone in the second half, which actually was a pleasant surprise. Everything else did a decent or better job of keeping me interested, excited, and anxious for the next episode (the only exception here is Love Hina, a show that I despise).

Probably the best part of the show thus far.
Probably the best part of the show: Hikari eating taiyaki

This season, there is one show that pokes me the wrong spot. Special A. A few say it’s funny, but I highly disagree. The show does not make me laugh and delivers the same jokes over and over until I’m sick of watching. Character development is done through random events, and although in some cases it works rather well (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu), Special A doesn’t accomplish that. Most of all, I don’t know what Special A wants to be. Maybe it’s because I haven’t watched enough anime and don’t know what is typical of shoujo, but at least NANA went somewhere with a story and Itazura na Kiss follows a story.

For those of you that continue on with this show or have read the manga, could you give me some reasons to continue, or should I give up? Do you think I’ll enjoy it later on if it hasn’t clicked with me yet?

special is more similar to karekano both with the same premise. Maybe your expectation were not met if you trying to find comedy in Special. Its light comedy but nothing extremely funny.

  2. I hated it. The characters feel too synthetic.
My disgust of the simplistic characters made me not watch more than 2 episodes.

There really isn’t much reason to continue. It is kind of like Kare Kano, but Kare Kano is better for romance by far or it’s a bit like Ouran, which is actually funny. The story isn’t great by any means to start with and the poor job done by Gonzo didn’t help. I was hoping they would pull out another Seto no Hanayome with Special A and make the anime better then the manga was. The shoujo to watch this season is Itazura na Kiss by far. Special A is just going to be a cocktease until the end.

  4. You shouldn’t. Go watch Allison and Lillia instead.

Meh, as much as people like to bring up Gonzo up when anything goes bad. It is a collaborative work between Gonzo and AIC. It just annoys me when people don’t at least know the party/staff involve in the production.

As much as I like Seto no Hanayome, the staffs involve in this production isn’t the same for Special A.

Yoshikazu Miyao debut as a full time director with S.A. Judging from his past work,it doesn’t look like his involved in alot of shoujo type show which may or may not foreshadow what’s happening with S.A.
Episode 7 was enjoyable with more Akira in action ^^,

  6. I hate this anime too..
I watched the series back then and I actually blogged it..
But I dropped it because it was so boring..
At first, I was excited about this anime because everyone says that it looks like Ouran (one of the best anime ever)..
But it seems that I have over-estimated the anime and this anime is really bad..
The jokes are not funny and I rarely laugh at any jokes in the anime, even though they tried to make me laugh..
Also, there is something missing in this anime, something that Ouran and other animes have but this anime doesn’t..

  7. I’d drop it, let us poor saps finish watching it (although I may not get that far), then watch only the decent episodes afterwards.

  8. You should watch it so I don’t have to.

  9. Because it’s awesome.
    Because it’s awesome.
    Because it’s awesome.

Yeah, don’t torture yourself if you don’t want to. The rest of us, we’re just masochists.

  10. Nagato that’s SPAM, at least, to me it is.

    I don’t bother with Special A

  11. lol, ah, Shana. I have a tsundere relationship with it almost as brutal as Shana herself XD. Haven’t bothered with this show, since I’ve been dropping shit this season like flies.

  12. 5 Reasons: Tadashi, Akira, Ryuu, Megumi, Jun. But since they hardly get any screen time (and are almost as synthetic as the irksome main characters anyways as korosora points out), that really means this show isn’t worth yours or our watch really.
But yea, we’re masos, all of us who still continue with this regardless :P

  13. Ah, thanks for the reminder. Turns out that my hunch that it wasn’t all that funny after watching 2 episodes still holds true. Phew.
