Twelve favorite posts of 2008: #12 LianYL’s True Tears analysis

I was thinking about making a single post with all twelve of my favorite posts of the anime blogosphere in 2008, but I realized I couldn’t think of all twelve yet so I had to settle with this. At least it gives me time to find more posts that I liked. This is day one of a twelve day series of posts. These are not in any particular order of preference. These posts are simply what I enjoyed reading this year. You could kind of count this in CCY’s Twelve Moments of Anime 2008 project.

Back in February and March, I made it clear that my favorite girl from True Tears is Isurugi Noe. She is adorable, cute, quirky, and moe. Aside from her, the show itself was excellent in terms of pacing, story, characters, and animation. It could possibly have been the all-around best show I’ve seen at that point in my anime watching. Then a certain post came along, written by LianYL of the Research Institute for Unicultural Visual Arts, which completely changed my perception of the show.

I miss symbolism and themes quite easily. This is for books, movies, and anime. That’s why posts like these help me understand and appreciate a show that much more. Yes, I may be rather on the dim side, but that doesn’t mean I can’t watch and praise a show! When LianYL unleashed his analysis of True Tears, titled “True Tears, Life Romanticized – Reviewed, Spliced and Totally Analyzed,” I came.

Even though it could have easily been tl;dr (it’s ten pages in print preview), I read the whole thing and was utterly amazed. There was so much I missed, so much that slipped past me. I would have enjoyed it for what’s on the surface, but I realized the story is much deeper than that. The reason for Noe’s fall went over my head. I couldn’t quite understand what the parasite song meant (although I could always blame the fansubs for that). I didn’t fully comprehend the importance of the picture books.

This post enhanced my enjoyment of True Tears and placed it near the top of my 2008 anime list. It assisted in my understanding of the show and caused me to realize I needed to take the time and actually think about a show.

Yay, more uniqueness in the 12 Days countdown. This one should be fun to watch. :3

I definitely remember this post as well; it was absolutely overwhelming with how much it analyzed and explained everything in a way that would put me to shame. A definite read for anyone who’s seen True Tears, I agree.

First of all, thanks for linking to those two posts; you’ve sent me on an archive-digging quest in search of intellectual blogosphere discourse that’s likely to last the rest of the night.

Otherwise, I look forward to the rest of the posts in this series; it’s a unique spin on the original formula, and it has practical benefit to those of us *coughmecough* who haven’t been in the ’sphere for too long.
